Peninsula Catholic High School

School Profile

About Us

Peninsula Catholic High School is the oldest Catholic school in the Tidewater area

We were originally established by Bishop Augustine Van de Vyver in 1903 as St. Vincent de Paul School for Girls. Four Sisters of Charity of Nazareth opened the school in a building donated by Thomas Fortune Ryan and his wife, Ida Mary Barry Ryan. The school became co-educational in 1929 when the Xaverian Brothers closed their school for boys.

In 1960 our name was changed to St. Vincent Central High School by Bishop Russell. In the belief that the name should reflect all supporting parishes, the Bishop renamed us Peninsula Catholic High School in 1966.

The Class of 1995 was the last to graduate from the original school site in downtown Newport News. Classes began in September 1995 at a newly constructed modern facility on Harpersville Road, Newport News.

Peninsula Catholic now serves close to 300 students in grades 8-12 with 29 lay teachers and offers 11:1 student to teacher ratio. In 2013, we instituted a one-to-one technology initiative where all students are given a Chromebook; to use in the classroom and at home, to enhance their PC Learning experience. The Chromebook allows students to experience learning in a whole new light. From virtual dissections to exciting interaction with other students around the globe - the use of 21st Century Learning in the classroom has undoubtedly enhanced the education process.

Peninsula Catholic is proud to be accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and School Council of Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS-CASI) as well as the Virginia Catholic Education Association (VCEA).
